Abacos

The Abacos are a 200-kilometre crescent chain of islands and cays in the northern Bahamas, 250 kilometres north of Nassau — historically settled by American Loyalists fleeing the 1783 colonial defeat, with whose Anglo-Saxon descendants the islands still hold a distinctly New England-style village and architectural culture. The sheltered Sea of Abaco inland sea between the cays and the larger Abaco mainland is one of the most-protected shallow-water cruising regions in the western Atlantic, ideal for bareboat charters. Standard cruising highlights include Hope Town on Elbow Cay (with the iconic candy-striped 1864 British Imperial Lighthouse, one of three remaining kerosene-fuelled manually-wound lighthouses in the world), Green Turtle Cay, Man-O-War Cay (traditional wooden boat-building), and Treasure Cay beach. The 2019 Hurricane Dorian severely damaged the islands; recovery is ongoing. Charter base at Marsh Harbour. Season runs year-round; peak November-April.
