Aldabra Atoll is the world's second-largest raised coral atoll, 1,100 kilometres southwest of Mahé — closer to Madagascar than to the rest of the Seychelles. The atoll's 155 square kilometres of land holds the world's largest population of Aldabra giant tortoises — 100,000+ wild tortoises, the only oceanic-island population of giant tortoises left (Galapagos has the only other surviving giant-tortoise species). The atoll is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most strictly protected wildlife areas in the world, with a maximum of 800 visitors per year by Seychelles Islands Foundation permit. The central lagoon (the size of Manhattan) drains and refills twice daily through narrow channels with strong tidal currents. Visiting yachts anchor offshore and access the reserve only by guided permit. Aldabra is 36 hours from Mahé by yacht. Season runs April through November.
