English Harbour

English Harbour sits on the south coast of Antigua, immediately east of Falmouth Harbour — the historical British naval base for the Eastern Caribbean from 1725 onwards. The walled stone Nelson's Dockyard at the head of the harbour is the only surviving Georgian-era working dockyard in the world (Nelson commanded the Leeward Islands squadron from here 1784-1787) and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The dockyard buildings now hold the Nelson's Dockyard National Park (a museum, the Admiral's Inn hotel, and a working boatyard), plus several charter agencies. The harbour itself is one of the most-sheltered natural anchorages in the Caribbean — completely landlocked except for the narrow entrance channel. The cliff-top Shirley Heights 250 metres above the harbour holds the standard Sunday-night-barbecue sunset viewpoint. Season runs year-round; peak November-April.
