Apulia (Puglia in Italian) is the southeast Italian region — the \"heel\" of the country, with 800 kilometres of coastline that wraps around the spur of Italy from the Adriatic at the north to the Ionian at the south. The northern Adriatic coast holds the small offshore archipelago Tremiti Islands (3 inhabited islands, marine reserve), the cliff-edge town of Polignano a Mare, and the working ports at Bari (Saint Nicholas relics, old city) and Brindisi (ferry hub to Greece). The eastern Salento peninsula tip holds Otranto (the easternmost Italian town, with an 11th-century Norman cathedral mosaic) and Santa Maria di Leuca at the very heel. The southern Ionian coast holds the long sand beaches around Gallipoli. Charter routes are typically 5-7 days, base at Brindisi or Otranto. Season runs May through October.
