Ari Atoll is the largest atoll in the Maldives — a 90-kilometre north-south ring west of Malé, with 105 islands and dozens of submerged reefs. The southern Ari (Alifu Dhaalu) is the only place in the Maldives where whale sharks aggregate year-round rather than seasonally — the 8-12 metre filter-feeders cruise along the outer reef wall off Maamigili Island in 5-30 metres of water, with a 90% sighting rate on snorkel trips. The atoll also holds the densest manta-ray cleaning stations in the Maldives (Madivaru Faru, Hukuruelhi Faru). The west-coast dive sites are dramatic outer-reef wall drops, with the inner lagoon (the size of an Italian region) holding white-sand bommies and shallow reef gardens. The atoll has 30+ resort islands. Ari is 90 minutes from South Malé by sail. Season runs year-round.
