Faial is a 173-square-kilometre Azores island in the central group, 8 kilometres west of Pico across the Faial Channel. The island is internationally known among sailors for the Marina da Horta — the world's fourth-most-visited yacht marina and the standard mid-Atlantic stopover for transatlantic sailing crossings (most boats sailing east-to-west or west-to-east across the North Atlantic call here for crew rest, supplies, and weather routing). The marina seawalls are covered in painted murals from visiting crews — by tradition, every transatlantic boat that stops here paints a panel as good-luck offering. The marina-side Peter Café Sport (1918) is the world's most-rated sailor's bar and informal Azores transatlantic crew clearing-house. The northwest tip of the island holds the Capelinhos volcano, which erupted in 1957-58 and added 2.4 square kilometres of new land. Faial is 30 minutes from Pico. Season runs May through October.
