São Jorge is a long thin Azores island in the central group, 56 kilometres long but only 8 kilometres wide — a single volcanic ridge that rises 1,053 metres at the Pico da Esperança central peak and drops vertically to the sea on both the north and south coasts. The defining feature is the fajãs — flat lava-and-debris plains at sea level at the foot of the cliffs, formed by historic landslides and lava flows, on which the small fishing villages and farmland sit. The 70+ fajãs hold the population of 8,400 across hard-to-reach cliff-bottom hamlets, the most isolated way of life remaining in the Azores. The main harbour is Velas on the southwest coast, with a 110-berth marina. The island produces Queijo de São Jorge, a hard cow's-milk cheese aged minimum 3 months, the most-famous Azores cheese. São Jorge is 30 minutes from Pico. Season runs May through October.
