São Miguel is the largest island in the Azores, the Portuguese mid-Atlantic archipelago 1,400 kilometres west of Lisbon. The 760-square-kilometre island sits at the eastern end of the archipelago and holds the capital Ponta Delgada, with the international airport and the main Azores yacht charter base at Marina de Ponta Delgada (640 berths). São Miguel is volcanic — three calderas on the island hold the dramatic crater lakes that define it: the twin Sete Cidades lakes (one blue, one green), the inland Fogo Lake in a 1.5-kilometre crater, and the Furnas active geothermal valley (with the cozido meat-and-vegetable stew cooked underground in hot springs). Day-sail routes circle the island in 12 hours, with side trips to the small Vila Franca do Campo islet (a perfect circular sea-level volcanic crater). Season runs May through October.
