Terceira is the third-largest of the Azores, in the central group. The island has been a strategic mid-Atlantic stop for shipping since the 15th-century Portuguese discovery — the Angra do Heroísmo harbour was a Portuguese Empire fleet base for 400 years and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site (the most-intact Renaissance walled town on a transatlantic shipping route). The town's Marina de Angra holds 260 berths. Terceira holds the only active US Air Force base outside the United States in mainland Europe (Lajes Field), used as a NATO mid-Atlantic refuelling stop. The island has volcanic origins like its neighbours but a milder landscape — rolling cattle pasture instead of dramatic calderas. The local culture preserves the medieval Tourada à corda (bull-on-a-rope) street festival. Terceira is 90 nautical miles east of Pico. Season runs May through October.
