Graciosa

Graciosa (\"the Graceful\") is the northernmost Azores island in the central group, an oval island 12 by 7 kilometres with the lowest elevation of all the Azores (404 metres at Caldeira peak). The island has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2007. The southern Caldeira volcanic crater holds the Furna do Enxofre — a sulphur-vent cave 100 metres deep, accessible by 184 spiral steps to an underground sulphur-water lake 80 metres below the crater floor. The main harbour is at Santa Cruz da Graciosa on the north coast, a small whitewashed village around a 16th-century church. The island has the highest concentration of preserved windmills in the Azores (40+ Dutch-style windmills) — the island's historical grain-and-water-pumping system. Graciosa is 90 minutes from São Jorge by sail. Season runs May through October.
