Pico is the second-largest Azores island, in the central group — distinguished by Mount Pico (2,351 metres), the highest mountain in all of Portugal, a stratovolcano that dominates the western half of the island. The island's south coast vineyards are a UNESCO World Heritage Site for the Pico Island Vineyard Culture — a 200-year-old system of small black-basalt walled plots (currais) that protect the vines from the open Atlantic wind, producing the local Verdelho fortified wine. The island has two ports: Madalena on the west coast (ferry to Faial, 30 minutes) and Lajes do Pico on the south (historical whaling port, now a sperm whale watching base — the Azores hold one of the world's largest sperm whale populations year-round). Pico is 30 minutes from Faial by sail. Season runs May through October.
