Santa Maria is the southernmost and easternmost Azores island, 80 kilometres south of São Miguel — and the first Azores island discovered by Portuguese sailors in 1427. The 97-square-kilometre island is geologically the oldest in the Azores (8.1 million years), with the volcanic activity ended long enough ago that erosion has flattened the original lava cones into a rolling green countryside. The island is the only Azores island with sand beaches — the rare yellow sand at Praia Formosa on the south coast and the white sand at São Lourenço bay on the east. The capital Vila do Porto on the south coast holds the small marina and the historic Igreja Matriz church visited by Christopher Columbus on his return voyage from the first America trip in March 1493. Santa Maria is 4 hours from São Miguel by sail. Season runs May through October.
