Flores (\"Flowers Island\") is the westernmost inhabited Azores island and one of the westernmost points of Europe — at 31° west longitude, west of the Atlantic Mid-Ocean Ridge that geologically marks the boundary between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates (Flores and Corvo sit on the American plate; the rest of the Azores on the Eurasian). The 142-square-kilometre island holds seven crater lakes in the central Caldeira, dramatic waterfalls in deep ravines (most-photographed: Poço do Bacalhau, a 90-metre vertical fall), and 656 plant species (the densest plant diversity in the Azores). The two harbours are Lajes das Flores on the south coast and Santa Cruz das Flores on the east. Flores is 130 nautical miles west of Faial, an open-Atlantic 14-hour sail. Season runs May through September.
