Baa Atoll sits in the northern Maldives, 120 kilometres northwest of Malé — designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2011 in recognition of its globally significant marine biodiversity. The atoll is best known for Hanifaru Bay, a small protected sanctuary on the east side where between May and November, plankton-rich currents create the world's largest known reef-manta-ray aggregation — up to 250 reef mantas plus whale sharks feeding in a 1.2-square-kilometre area. Snorkel-only access (no diving, no anchoring) by Marine Park permit. The atoll has 75 islands plus dozens of sandbanks, with 13 resort islands. Other notable dive sites are Dhonfanu Thila and the Nelivaru wreck. Baa is 6 hours from Malé by sail and 3 hours from Raa Atoll. Season runs year-round; manta peak May-November.
