Ayvalık sits on the south side of the Edremit Gulf on the Turkish west Aegean coast, opposite the Greek island of Lesbos. The town was almost entirely Greek Orthodox until the 1923 population exchange — its stone houses, narrow lanes, and the converted church-mosques of the Old Town are 19th-century Greek constructions adapted for Turkish use. The harbour holds the working fishing fleet and a small marina for charter yachts; offshore, Cunda Island (Alibey) is connected to Ayvalık by a causeway and holds a row of seafront fish restaurants and the iconic Saint Nicholas church (now Taksiyarhis museum). The Edremit Gulf is the largest concentration of olive groves in Turkey — 2.5 million olive trees, the regional cooking centred on cold-pressed oil. Lesbos is 30 minutes across the strait by sail. Ayvalık is 6 hours from Çeşme by sail. Season runs May through October.
