Brazil

Brazil's sailing centre is the Costa Verde — a stretch between Rio de Janeiro and Paraty with 365 islands tucked inside the protected Angra dos Reis bay. Ilha Grande has no cars, no large hotels, and beaches like Lopes Mendes that consistently rank among the world's best. North of Rio, Búzios is a chic peninsula with 20 beaches and a beach-club scene that draws the Rio set every weekend. Onshore: caipirinha at a kiosk, fresh moqueca in a clay pot, samba at a Lapa bar back in Rio. The food is generous and the water is warm year-round. Season runs December through March for the southern summer; April-November stay sailable but cooler, with fewer crowds.

Recommended duration: ideal for 5 days
