Ammouliani

Ammouliani is the only inhabited offshore island in the Halkidiki region — a 4-square-kilometre island in the strait between the Sithonia and Athos peninsulas, sitting at the head of the Singitic Gulf. The single village (also called Ammouliani) sits on the south coast around a working fishing harbour with about 600 year-round residents. The island holds Alykes beach on the south (a turquoise-water cove with a sand bottom that has been called the closest Caribbean-like swimming water in mainland Greece) and the Megali Ammos beach on the north. Just east of Ammouliani sit the Drenia islets — 5 uninhabited rocky islands with sheltered turquoise channels, a popular day-sail destination from Ammouliani. The neighbouring Mount Athos monastic state — a 60-kilometre forbidden-to-women peninsula of 20 medieval monasteries — sits 7 kilometres east across the gulf. Ammouliani is 30 minutes from Ouranoupoli by sail. Season runs May through October.
