Agios Nikolaos sits on the eastern Cretan coast, on the protected Gulf of Mirabello — a deep inland sea body that gives Agios Nikolaos one of the calmest sailing windows in Crete. The town wraps around a small almost-circular freshwater lake (Voulismeni) connected to the harbour by a narrow canal, with a row of seafront tavernas around the lake and the visiting yacht moorings in the outer harbour. North across the gulf, the small island of Spinalonga holds a 16th-century Venetian fortress and the buildings of the former Greek leper colony (active 1903-1957) — now a popular day-sail destination reachable in 60 minutes. Charter base is Marina Agios Nikolaos (250 berths). Agios Nikolaos is 90 minutes from Heraklion west by sail. Season runs April through October.
