Amorgos

Amorgos is the easternmost of the Cyclades — a long thin island that became internationally known after Luc Besson filmed The Big Blue here in 1988. The icon of the island is Hozoviotissa Monastery, an 11th-century white-walled fortress that clings to a sheer cliff 300 metres above the sea, reached by a winding stone path. The harbour of Katapola handles the charter traffic, and the inland Chora village holds whitewashed alleys and a Venetian castle. Mouros beach on the south coast offers turquoise water against red rock. Amorgos is 2 hours from Naxos and 3 from Santorini. Season runs May through October.

Amorgos Shipwreck Olympia
4.9

The Shipwreck of Amorgos, also known as the "Olympia," is a poignant landmark located near Kalotaritissa Beach on the Greek island of Amorgos. It met its fate in February 1980 when the commercial ship Olympia ran aground on the rocks due to powerful winds, reaching up to 10 Beaufort. Originally named "Inland," the ship's attempt to find shelter during bad weather failed, leading to its collision with the rocks. Fortunately, the crew was able to abandon the ship, averting a greater tragedy. Despite its melancholic history, the Shipwreck of Amorgos has become a popular tourist attraction, drawing visitors who are captivated by its beauty and intrigued by its story, which has also been immortalized in films like "Le Grand Bleu" by Luc Besson.
