Delos

Delos is the only Greek island where you cannot stay overnight — the entire 3-square-kilometre territory is a UNESCO World Heritage archaeological site, and Greek law prohibits residence. The ancient Greeks considered it the sacred birthplace of Apollo and Artemis, and from the 8th century BC onward it grew into a religious centre and major trade port. Today the ruins are extensive: a marble-paved sacred way, the Terrace of the Lions (originals in the museum), Roman villas with intact floor mosaics, a small theatre, and house foundations covering most of the island. Boats anchor on the protected south side or at the larger neighbour Rhenia for swimming. Delos is 30 minutes from Mykonos. Season runs April through October.

At the heart of ancient Delos lies the Sacred Harbor and Agora, once a bustling hub of trade, worship, and cultural exchange. The harbor welcomed merchants, pilgrims, and travelers from across the Mediterranean, making Delos a crossroads of civilizations. Just beyond, the Agora—lined with columns and open spaces—served as a marketplace and gathering spot, where commerce and daily life intertwined with sacred rituals. Walking through these remains offers a vivid glimpse into the island’s golden age and its central role in ancient Greek history.

Terrace of the Lions
4.9

One of the most iconic sights on Delos, the Terrace of the Lions stands as a powerful symbol of the island’s sacred past. Originally gifted by the people of Naxos around 600 BC, the marble lions were dedicated to Apollo as guardians of the sanctuary. Although time has weathered them, the remaining statues still exude a sense of strength and majesty, overlooking the Sacred Way with timeless dignity. Visiting this site is a moving reminder of the reverence and grandeur that once defined Delos as the spiritual heart of the Aegean.

Highlights include the famous mosaics of Dionysus and unique sculptures that reflect Delos’ role as a major cultural and religious center of antiquity. A visit to the museum adds depth to the island experience, offering a vivid look into the daily life, artistry, and spirituality of ancient Greece.
