Astypalea sits between the Cyclades and the Dodecanese — geographically and culturally a bridge between the two — and is shaped like a butterfly, with two roughly equal wings connected by a narrow 100-metre isthmus. The Chora climbs a steep hill above the harbour at Pera Gialos, crowned by the 13th-century Querini Castle of the Venetian family who ruled here for 300 years. White cube houses tumble down to the sea, dotted with eight blue-domed windmills along the ridge. The eastern wing holds quiet coves at Vatses and Kaminakia. Astypalea is 3 hours from Kos. Season runs May through October.
