Dominica (not to be confused with the Dominican Republic) is the most-rainforested Caribbean island, between Guadeloupe north and Martinique south. The 750-square-kilometre island holds the world's second-largest hot lake (Boiling Lake, 200°C surface temperature, accessible only by 6-hour hike), nine active volcanoes, and over 365 rivers — the densest river network in the Caribbean. About 60% of the island is forest, and the Morne Trois Pitons National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The capital Roseau on the west coast holds a small visiting yacht harbour; the larger anchorage at Portsmouth Cabrits Bay in the north holds the visiting megayachts and the restored 18th-century Fort Shirley. Dominica is the only island where the indigenous Kalinago people still hold a designated territory (Kalinago Reserve, east coast). Dominica is 30 nautical miles from Guadeloupe. Season runs year-round.
