Guadeloupe is a French overseas department in the Lesser Antilles, north of Dominica — locally nicknamed \"the butterfly island\" because it consists of two main islands separated by a 30-metre saltwater channel that together form the shape of a butterfly. The western wing (Basse-Terre) is volcanic and mountainous with the active La Soufrière volcano (1,467 metres) and dense rainforest; the eastern wing (Grande-Terre) is flat and limestone with white-sand beaches. The main charter base is at Pointe-à-Pitre on the central channel. The 12-kilometre satellite archipelago of Les Saintes (Terre-de-Haut and Terre-de-Bas) holds one of the most-rated harbours in the Caribbean and a single-village base for day-sails. Guadeloupe is 25 nautical miles north of Dominica and 60 from Antigua. Season runs year-round; peak December-April.
