Beyoğlu is the modern cultural district of European Istanbul, on the north side of the Golden Horn opposite the historical Fatih peninsula. The district climbs from the seafront at Karaköy (with the modern Galataport cruise terminal) up to the medieval Galata Tower (1348) and along the 19th-century İstiklal Caddesi avenue to Taksim Square — a 2-kilometre walking street with the 1875 nostalgic tram, late-Ottoman embassy buildings (now consulates), and the largest concentration of restaurants and bars in the city. The district's name comes from the European diplomatic and merchant quarter (\"Beyoğlu\" = \"son of the lord\") that grew here under the Ottomans. From Galataport, charter yachts sail directly up the Bosphorus past Dolmabahçe Palace (10 minutes north). Beyoğlu is across the Golden Horn from Fatih. Season runs April through November.
