Fatih is the central district of European Istanbul, occupying the entire historical peninsula between the Sea of Marmara, the Bosphorus, and the Golden Horn — the original Byzantine and Ottoman capital. The district holds the highest concentration of UNESCO-listed monuments in Turkey: Topkapı Palace (Ottoman seat of government 1465-1856), Hagia Sophia (537 AD Byzantine cathedral, now a mosque), the Blue Mosque (1616), the Süleymaniye Mosque (1557, Mimar Sinan's masterpiece), the Grand Bazaar, and the underground Basilica Cistern. The seafront walls of Topkapı face the Marmara entry to the Bosphorus — charter yachts entering the strait from the south sail directly below the palace gardens. Fatih is 30 minutes from Galataport across the Golden Horn by sail. Season runs April through November.
