Lazio is the central Italian region built around Rome — with 220 kilometres of Tyrrhenian coastline that runs from the Tuscan border in the north to the Campania border in the south, and the offshore Pontine Islands archipelago 30 nautical miles west. The mainland coast charter bases are Civitavecchia (the historical port of Rome since the 2nd century AD), the smaller Anzio (Roman seaside resort, modern ferry port), and Gaeta in the south (medieval harbour, Mount Orlando promontory). The mid-coast holds the cliff-edge village of Sperlonga (whitewashed houses on a 100-metre cliff, the Roman Emperor Tiberius' grotto-villa at sea level), and the lower Lazio coast holds the Circeo National Park headland. Offshore, the Pontine Islands (Ponza, Palmarola, Ventotene) hold the best Roman-era harbours and cliff-edge swimming. Season runs April through October.
