Lhaviyani Atoll (also called Faadhippolhu) sits in the northern Maldives, 120 kilometres north of Malé. The atoll is smaller and more compact than its neighbours (60 by 35 kilometres) with only 4 inhabited islands and 5 resort islands — among the least-developed of the Maldives' charter-accessible atolls. The capital is Naifaru, a working fishing town and the country's leading producer of traditional raa (palm-tree toddy). The standard dive sites include the Kuredhdhoo Express channel (drift dive with grey reef sharks), the Shipyard (two scuttled tugboats now overgrown with coral), and the Fushi Faru Thila manta cleaning station. The atoll is a major bigeye tuna and sailfish fishing region. Lhaviyani is 4 hours from Malé by sail. Season runs year-round; peak November-April.
