Martinique

Martinique is a French overseas department in the central Caribbean Lesser Antilles, between Dominica north and Saint Lucia south — culturally and politically integrated with France (the euro, French civil law, EU membership). The 1,128-square-kilometre island is dominated by the active Mont Pelée volcano (1,397 metres), which destroyed the colonial-era capital Saint-Pierre in 1902 in one of the deadliest volcanic eruptions in modern history (30,000 dead in 8 minutes from pyroclastic flow). The southern Le Marin harbour is one of the largest charter-yacht bases in the Caribbean (700+ berths). The capital Fort-de-France on the west coast holds the 19th-century Schoelcher Library and Fort Saint-Louis. Day-sail routes reach Sainte-Anne beaches in the south and the Diamond Rock volcanic plug. Season runs year-round; peak December-April.
