Chios

Chios sits 7 kilometres off the Turkish coast at Çeşme and produces one product the rest of the Mediterranean cannot copy: mastic, a clear resin from the local Pistacia lentiscus trees that grows only here, used in everything from chewing gum to ouzo flavouring. The island's southern half holds the famous mastichochoria — medieval villages built in defensive labyrinths by the Genoese, with stone-carved geometric facades. Mesta and Pyrgi are the most striking. Anchorages on the coast include Chios Town, the small fishing harbour at Lagada, and the cliff-edge village of Vrontados with its rocket-war Easter tradition. Season runs May through October.
