Methana

Methana is a peninsula (connected to the Peloponnese by a thin land bridge) that hosts one of the four dormant volcanoes of the Aegean — the Methana volcanic field, with a 700-metre crater and sulphur springs that have been used for thermal bathing since ancient Greece. The small harbour town sits below the cone, with a working ferry quay and visiting yacht moorings along the seafront. Methana is geologically active — small steam vents still hiss in the crater walls — but the last lava eruption was in 230 BC. The peninsula's east coast holds quiet anchorages at Vathi and Agios Georgios. Methana is 30 minutes from Poros and 90 minutes from Aegina by sail. Season runs April through October.
