The Similan Islands are a nine-island Thai marine national park 70 kilometres off the northwest Andaman coast, north of Phuket. The chain runs north-south for 30 kilometres, with the islands numbered 1-9 from south to north. The islands are uninhabited apart from park rangers; visiting requires a Thai marine park permit and a 4-6 hour sail from the mainland. The Similan are internationally ranked among the top-10 dive destinations in the world for water clarity (visibility 25-40 metres) and granite-boulder underwater landscapes — Elephant Head Rock (a submerged granite pinnacle complex at Island 8), Christmas Point, and Boulder City are the most-dived sites. The main anchorage is Donald Duck Bay at Island 8 (Koh Similan). Similans are 4 hours from Phuket by yacht. Season runs October through May; park closed May-October monsoon.
