Airlie Beach is the mainland charter-base town for the Whitsundays, on the central Queensland coast 1,100 kilometres north of Brisbane. The town has only about 1,200 permanent residents but holds the largest concentration of bareboat-charter operators in Australia at the Coral Sea Marina and the smaller Abell Point Marina — together over 600 berths. From the marina, charter yachts sail across the 15-kilometre Whitsunday Passage to the islands. The town's seafront Esplanade has a designed beach lagoon (because the natural mainland coast holds box jellyfish in summer), backed by restaurants and tour operator offices. Airlie hosts Airlie Beach Race Week (August) — the world's largest cruising-yacht regatta after Hamilton Island. Airlie Beach is 60 minutes from Hamilton Island by sail. Season runs April through November.
