Hamilton Island is the most-developed of the 74 Whitsunday Islands off the central Queensland coast of Australia — a 5-square-kilometre island that has been operated as a single tourism resort since 1979 by the Oatley family, with its own airport, hospital, school, and 4 hotels. The Hamilton Island Marina (200 berths plus megayacht infrastructure) is the largest in the Whitsundays and the standard bareboat-charter base for the region. The Whitsundays are inside the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, with the world's largest coral reef system 70 kilometres east. The island holds the annual Hamilton Island Race Week regatta (August) and serves as the access point to Whitehaven Beach (10 nautical miles south, 7-kilometre 98% pure silica sand beach). Hamilton is 1 hour from Airlie Beach across Whitsunday Passage. Season runs April through November.
