Hook Island is the second-largest of the Whitsunday Islands, just north of Whitsunday Island in the centre of the archipelago. The 53-square-kilometre uninhabited island holds the densest fringing-reef coverage in the Whitsundays — the inner-bay reefs on the south coast at Manta Ray Bay, Maureen's Cove, and Butterfly Bay are the standard snorkel sites for Whitsunday charter routes, with reef visibility down to 10 metres on calm days. The bays cut deep into the island, providing sheltered anchorages with overnight mooring balls maintained by the Marine Park. The north side of the island faces the open Coral Sea and is sometimes the closest practical access to the outer Great Barrier Reef from a charter route. Hook is uninhabited apart from the mooring rangers. Hook Island is 90 minutes from Hamilton Island by sail. Season runs April through November.
