Long Island sits just 500 metres off the mainland Whitsundays coast — the closest of the Whitsunday Islands to Airlie Beach, separated by the narrow Whitsunday Passage tidal channel. The 9-kilometre north-south island is shaped accurately by its name — narrow, long, and forested, with steep ridges and the only flat ground on the north-shore beaches. The island holds the Whitsunday Long Island Resort at Happy Bay on the north tip, with about 50 rooms and a private beach. Palm Bay on the west coast is a sheltered anchorage with reef-edge moorings. The proximity to Airlie Beach makes Long Island the standard one-night quick-stop for charters with limited time, or the first-or-last overnight for a Whitsundays bareboat charter. Long Island is 30 minutes from Airlie Beach by sail. Season runs April through November.
