Whitehaven Beach is the defining sight of the Whitsundays — a 7-kilometre crescent of beach on the east side of uninhabited Whitsunday Island (the largest of the 74 Whitsunday Islands), distinguished by sand that is 98% pure silica (silicon dioxide). The sand does not retain heat, stays cool underfoot in 35°C summer temperatures, and is so fine and chemically resistant that NASA reportedly considered it for the Hubble Space Telescope mirror. The beach's north end opens into Hill Inlet, a tidal sand inlet where the patterns of white sand swirl visibly with the incoming and outgoing tide — the most-photographed aerial view in Australian sailing tourism. Whitehaven is uninhabited and protected: no resort, no day-trip facilities, just walking access from the marine park beach. Whitehaven is 30 minutes from Hamilton Island by sail. Season runs April through November.
