St. Martin is the smallest land mass in the world shared by two sovereign nations — the 87-square-kilometre island is split between the French Saint-Martin (north, EU territory) and the Dutch Sint Maarten (south, Kingdom of the Netherlands). The border is unmarked and unguarded since a 1648 treaty between the colonial powers. The Dutch side holds the principal harbour at Philipsburg (commercial cruise port) and the famous Simpson Bay Lagoon (one of the largest enclosed inner lagoons in the Caribbean, with bridge access for charter yachts up to 50 metres). The French side holds the gastronomic capital Grand Case (called the \"Caribbean culinary capital\" for its 30+ restaurants on one beach street). St. Martin is the standard northern-Caribbean charter entry, with the Maho Beach airport approach for the lowest commercial-jet flyovers in the world. Season runs year-round; peak December-April.
