Arzachena is the central inland town of the Costa Smeralda region — the original Sardinian village from which the surrounding coast takes its administrative identity (Porto Cervo, Poltu Quatu, Cannigione, Baja Sardinia, and Porto Rotondo all sit within the Arzachena municipality). The Old Town sits 7 kilometres inland on a granite plateau, with low stone houses around the 18th-century Santa Maria church and the iconic mushroom-shaped Roccia il Fungo wind-eroded granite formation just outside town. From the inner Gulf of Arzachena, charter routes reach the open Costa Smeralda coast and the La Maddalena Archipelago in 45-90 minutes. The Arzachena area also holds the prehistoric Tomba dei Giganti Nuragic-era megalithic tombs scattered across the hinterland. Arzachena is 30 minutes from Porto Cervo. Season runs May through October.
