South Malé Atoll sits immediately south of North Malé, separated by the deep Vaadhoo Kandu channel — a 7-kilometre-wide gap with strong tidal currents that channels reef sharks, manta rays, and whale sharks twice daily. The atoll is a 35-kilometre oval ring of about 30 islands, including the famous Vaadhoo Island that is sometimes visited by bioluminescent dinoflagellates (the \"sea of stars\" effect when waves wash on the beach at night). The main dive sites are Cocoa Thila (reef sharks), Kandooma Thila (eagle rays), and the Embudu Express channel drift. Charter routes from North Malé typically transit the Vaadhoo Kandu south and overnight in the protected inner anchorages of South Malé before continuing further south. South Malé is 1 hour from Malé by sail. Season runs year-round; peak November-April.
