St. Barts (Saint-Barthélemy) is a small French Caribbean island in the northern Leewards, 35 kilometres southeast of St. Martin — a 25-square-kilometre rocky island that has become the highest-density Caribbean megayacht destination since the 1980s. The harbour at Gustavia (named for the 18th-century Swedish king Gustav III; St. Barts was Swedish from 1784 to 1878) is rated for vessels up to 100 metres with stern-to mooring directly along the village quay. Anse de Colombier on the north tip is the largest sheltered anchorage (vehicle-free, accessible only by boat or hike). Saline and Gouverneur on the south coast are the best white-sand beaches. The annual Bucket Regatta (March) and New Year's Eve Regatta bring the world's largest sailing megayachts to Gustavia. St. Barts is 30 minutes from St. Martin. Season runs year-round; peak December-April.
