Vaavu Atoll (Felidhu Atoll) is the smallest inhabited atoll in the Maldives by population (1,700 people), 60 kilometres south of Malé. The atoll has only 5 inhabited islands and 3 resort islands across a 40-kilometre east-west chain, with the rest of the reef unspoiled. The defining feature is the cluster of deep reef channels (kandu) on the east side — Fottheyo Kandu, Devana Kandu, Alimathaa Kandu — that channel strong tidal currents from the Indian Ocean into the inner lagoon. The currents bring in reef sharks, eagle rays, and tuna for daily feeding patrols. Vaavu has one of the most-rated night dive sites in the Maldives: at Alimathaa Jetty, dozens of nurse sharks gather under the resort jetty at sunset. Vaavu is 3 hours from Malé by sail. Season runs year-round.
