Falmouth Harbour
Falmouth Harbour sits on the south coast of Antigua, immediately west of English Harbour — the two together form the largest concentration of charter-yacht infrastructure in the Eastern Caribbean. Falmouth is the deeper-water harbour, with the Antigua Yacht Club Marina (190 berths plus dedicated megayacht infrastructure for vessels up to 100 metres) on the east shore and the Falmouth Harbour Marina (160 berths) on the west. The bay is the standard megayacht winter haul-out and crew base for the entire Eastern Caribbean season. Falmouth hosts the annual Antigua Charter Yacht Show (December) — the largest charter-yacht show in the Caribbean — and the start lines of Antigua Sailing Week (April) and the Classic Yacht Regatta. The harbour is connected by 1-kilometre footpath to the historic English Harbour. Falmouth is 30 minutes from St John's capital by road. Season runs year-round; peak November-April.
Jolly Harbour
Jolly Harbour sits on the west coast of Antigua, 12 kilometres south of the capital St John's — a purpose-built marina village developed in the 1990s with a 152-berth marina inside an artificial protected basin, plus a residential canal-house quarter, an 18-hole golf course, and the main shopping centre for west-coast Antigua charter visitors. The marina is the standard west-coast charter base for routes south to Jumby Bay, Five Islands (a snorkel-and-swim cluster of small uninhabited islets 5 kilometres north), and the protected Deep Bay with the Andes shipwreck (a 1905 barque visible 8 metres below the surface). The west coast leeward of Antigua holds the calmest sailing waters of the island, sheltered from the Atlantic trade winds. Jolly Harbour is 30 minutes from St John's and 90 minutes from Falmouth Harbour by sail. Season runs year-round; peak November-April.
Great Bird Island
Often described as a "desert island" paradise, Great Bird Island offers an escape like no other. Located within the North Sound National Park, this unspoiled gem is a haven of tranquility, blending breathtaking scenery with incredible biodiversity. The island is home to endangered species such as red-billed tropic birds and West Indian whistling ducks, making it a sanctuary for both nature enthusiasts and conservationists.
Visitors can snorkel in some of the Caribbean’s clearest waters, exploring vibrant coral reefs teeming with marine life. For those who prefer land adventures, a short hike to the island’s summit rewards you with panoramic views that feel almost unreal. With its untouched beauty and peaceful atmosphere, Great Bird Island is the perfect retreat for anyone seeking serenity and natural wonder on their sailing journey.
Dickenson Bay
Nestled on the northern tip of Antigua, Dickenson Bay is a must-visit destination for travelers seeking the perfect blend of relaxation and excitement. Renowned for its sugar-white sandy beach that stretches along the bay, this idyllic location is perfect for swimming, sunbathing, or simply soaking in the Caribbean charm. The beach is lined with cozy, laid-back bars and restaurants, making it an excellent spot for bar-hopping and unwinding after a day of adventure.
Dickenson Bay is also the hub of Antigua’s windsurfing scene and offers a variety of water sports and activities for thrill-seekers. With its top-tier hotels and resorts, the area provides a luxurious yet welcoming atmosphere that attracts visitors from around the globe. Whether you’re indulging in water sports, sipping cocktails by the shore, or taking in the vibrant ambiance, Dickenson Bay promises an unforgettable stop on your Antigua sailing itinerary.
Green Island
Uninhabited and pristine, Green Island is a secluded paradise nestled off Antigua’s eastern coast. This hidden gem, accessible only by boat, offers a tranquil escape for those seeking unmatched serenity. Surrounded by calm waters and abundant anchorages, Green Island is a favorite among sailors looking to immerse themselves in nature's beauty. Exotic bird sightings and peaceful beaches add to its charm, making it an ideal spot for relaxation.
Adjacent to Green Island is Nonsuch Bay, another must-visit destination with its serene waters, gentle sea breezes, and barrier reef that invites exploration. Whether you’re anchoring in a quiet bay, soaking in the sunshine, or simply switching off from the world, Green Island captures the essence of a Caribbean escape. Here, sailing in Antigua feels truly blissful, offering an unrivaled retreat in one of the region’s most beautiful locations.
English Harbour
English Harbour sits on the south coast of Antigua, immediately east of Falmouth Harbour — the historical British naval base for the Eastern Caribbean from 1725 onwards. The walled stone Nelson's Dockyard at the head of the harbour is the only surviving Georgian-era working dockyard in the world (Nelson commanded the Leeward Islands squadron from here 1784-1787) and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The dockyard buildings now hold the Nelson's Dockyard National Park (a museum, the Admiral's Inn hotel, and a working boatyard), plus several charter agencies. The harbour itself is one of the most-sheltered natural anchorages in the Caribbean — completely landlocked except for the narrow entrance channel. The cliff-top Shirley Heights 250 metres above the harbour holds the standard Sunday-night-barbecue sunset viewpoint. Season runs year-round; peak November-April.
Diepp Freeman Bay
Antigua’s Tranquil Paradise
Nestled in a lush tropical setting, Freeman’s Bay is a breathtaking haven and a hidden gem of Antigua. Just a short sail from The Moorings base at Nelson’s Dockyard, this picturesque bay makes for the perfect final stop on your sailing adventure. Galleon Beach, with its powdery white sands and crystal-clear waters, invites you to relax and soak in the tranquil ambiance.
Dive into the calm waters and explore the nearby reef, where vibrant marine life abounds. Snorkelers are treated to encounters with sea turtles, lionfish, and a myriad of tropical fish. Freeman’s Bay effortlessly combines natural beauty and serenity, making it an unforgettable highlight of your Antiguan sailing itinerary.
