Halkidiki

Halkidiki (Greek Chalkidiki) is a 2,945-square-kilometre peninsula in Central Macedonia, Northern Greece, extending south from Thessaloniki into the Aegean — geographically distinctive for its three parallel southward-pointing finger-shaped sub-peninsulas (\"legs\"), each separated by a sheltered gulf. The westernmost finger is Kassandra (the main tourism leg, with the Porto Carras and Sani resort complexes), the middle is Sithonia (less developed, with the best swim beaches and the Toroneos Gulf protected anchorages), and the easternmost is Mount Athos — the 360-square-kilometre autonomous Orthodox Christian monastic republic that has been a males-only monastic community since 1054 AD (visiting yachts are forbidden from anchoring within 500 metres of the Athos coast and women are categorically excluded from the territory). The main charter base is the Porto Carras marina on Sithonia's west coast. Halkidiki is 4 hours from Thessaloniki by sail. Season runs May through September; meltemi peak July-August.

The 50-kilometre-long peninsula has the highest resort development in northern Greece, with a 130-kilometre coastline of consecutive pine-backed beaches and the closest swimming beaches to Thessaloniki (only 70 kilometres south, 90 minutes by road). The main charter base is the Sani Marina on the northwest coast (a 215-berth marina inside a private resort complex with 5 hotels). Other charter coves include Kalithea (south), Nea Skioni (southwest), and Possidi Cape at the southern tip (the longest sand spit in Greece). Sithonia is the middle of the three Halkidiki peninsulas — 45 kilometres long and less-developed than the western Kassandra leg, with about half the resort density and more protected pine forest. Other anchorages include Lagonisi on the east coast, Toroni on the southwest, and Vourvourou on the northeast (a small archipelago of 9 protected islets and shallow turquoise waters). The 800-metre Itamos peak at the centre is the highest point in Halkidiki. The neighbouring monastic peninsula Mount Athos sits east; Sithonia's east coast is one of the closest secular charter approaches to the Athos monastic ban. Sithonia is 90 minutes from Kassandra.
