Antigua is one of the most-established charter bases in the Eastern Caribbean — a 280-square-kilometre island with 365 beaches (locally claimed as \"one for every day of the year\") and the most-active sailing calendar in the Caribbean. The 18th-century English Harbour on the south coast is the historical British naval base for the Eastern Caribbean (Nelson commanded here 1784-1787) — the Nelson's Dockyard stone naval buildings are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the centre of charter activity. The neighbouring Falmouth Harbour is the megayacht charter base. Antigua hosts Antigua Sailing Week (April) and the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta. Day-sail routes reach Green Island off the east coast (snorkel anchorage in protected reef waters). Antigua is 30 nautical miles from Guadeloupe south. Season runs year-round; peak December-April.
