Corvo is the smallest and westernmost inhabited Azores island, 17 kilometres north of Flores — a 17-square-kilometre volcanic crater (the Caldeirão, a 2.5-kilometre-wide crater holding a freshwater lake with two islets) plus a thin coastal plain. The population is about 430 people, all living in the single village of Vila do Corvo on the south coast — the smallest functioning municipality in Portugal. There is one school, one church, one harbour, and one road (4 kilometres long). The Caldeirão crater rim hike (about 2 hours from the village) is the standard visitor activity. Corvo is at 31°06' west — the westernmost point of Portugal and one of the westernmost in Europe. The island sits on the North American tectonic plate. Corvo is 30 minutes from Flores by sail. Season runs May through September.
