Balıkesir is the central west-Turkish Aegean province, with a long indented coastline that includes the Edremit Gulf (the inner Aegean bay opposite the Greek island of Lesbos), the offshore islands Marmara and Avşa, and the southern shore of the Sea of Marmara. The main charter base is Ayvalık on the south side of the Edremit Gulf — a 19th-century Greek port town with Ottoman-era stone houses and the offshore Cunda Island connected by causeway (Greek Orthodox church-and-bell-tower architecture). The northern Balıkesir coast holds the small harbour villages around Bandırma on the Sea of Marmara. The hinterland holds Ottoman-era mountain spa towns and the inland city of Balıkesir 60 kilometres from the coast. Ayvalık is 30 minutes from Lesbos across the strait and 6 hours from Çeşme south. Season runs May through October.
