Preveza sits on the western Greek mainland, at the entry to the Ambracian Gulf — a 40-kilometre enclosed inland sea — and serves as the standard mainland charter base for routes south into the Ionian Islands. The Preveza Marina (170 berths) and the larger Cleopatra Marina across the narrow strait at Aktion (550 berths) sit either side of an undersea road tunnel built in 2002. The town itself holds the Venetian-era stone clock tower, the seafront promenade, and the ruins of Nicopolis 5 kilometres north — the Roman victory city built by Augustus after the 31 BC Battle of Actium (Antony and Cleopatra). South-Ionian charter routes reach Lefkada in 90 minutes and Paxos in 3 hours. Season runs April through October.
