Turgutreis sits on the southwest tip of the Bodrum Peninsula in Muğla Province, Turkey — a working town of about 18,000 year-round residents (rising to 80,000 in summer) named for the 16th-century Ottoman admiral Turgut Reis (born here 1485, served Suleiman the Magnificent, died at the Siege of Malta 1565). The town's west-facing geography makes it the established sunset coast of the Bodrum Peninsula — the only major Bodrum town where the sun sets over open Aegean water directly into the Greek islands of Kos, Kalymnos, and Pserimos visible 12-25 kilometres west. The main charter base is D-Marin Turgutreis (550 berths, the largest of the Bodrum Peninsula marinas). The seafront promenade runs 2 kilometres along the town's main bay. The neighbouring sheltered cove of Kadıkalesi 3 kilometres south holds the ruins of the medieval Byzantine fortress and a 1-kilometre swim beach. Turgutreis is 30 minutes from Yalıkavak by sail. Season runs May through October; meltem peak July-August.
