North Aegean

The North Aegean region holds the Greek islands closest to mainland Greece's northern coast and the Turkish Aegean — a less-developed cluster than the Cyclades, with larger islands separated by longer open-water crossings. The main islands are Lesbos (third-largest Greek island, ouzo and olive oil), Limnos (sandy beaches and Hellenistic ruins at Hephaistia), Thassos (forested marble island, closest to the mainland), Samothrace (the sanctuary of the Great Gods, find-site of the Winged Victory statue), and the smaller Skiros. The cluster also includes the Sporades chain (Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos) at the western edge. Charter routes are longer than southern Greek routes (30-60 nautical miles between major islands) — most cruises are 7-10 days, starting from Skiathos west or Lesbos east. Season runs May through October.

Recommended duration: ideal for 2-3 days
