Kyra Panagia is an uninhabited island in the National Marine Park of Alonnisos, 12 kilometres northeast of Alonnisos. The 25-square-kilometre island has been owned by the Holy Monastery of Megisti Lavra on Mount Athos since the 10th century — the 11th-century Byzantine monastic farm of Panagia on the ridge above Planitis bay is still maintained by visiting monks and holds Athonite-tradition icons and frescoes. The two main charter anchorages are Planitis (a deep U-shaped bay on the southwest with 70 mooring balls) and Agios Petros on the south. The interior of the island is grazed by a small population of feral goats descended from the monastery flock. Day-sail routes north reach the more remote Yura island (one of the rare monk seal breeding caves). Kyra Panagia is 90 minutes from Alonnisos. Season runs May through October.
